OCT I 1938

Narrative

The fall of Bilbao (see below) was in the end swift, falling at the first attack. Bolstered by engineers and artillery the Nationalist took the city with little resistance.  The Basques decided to evacuate the civilians from the city only in September, blowing most of the bridges but not the steelworks and war Industries which horrified the leaders in Alicante.  The coast road to the west was soon packed with refugees under constant bombardment from the Nationalist Ships in the bay.  A junta defence under Leizaola, the minister for justice, stayed behind to defend the city while other officials fled as best they may. Some by small ships although larger vessels were impounded by the Nationalist capital ships anchored offshore.

The Basque defence curved around the bend of the river Nervion with an outpost at Guernica.  Nationalist 5th columnist’s shooting in the streets were summarily dealt with by an  anarchist squad who burned the church of the Nationalist sympathising priest.  But with the imminent arrival of the Nationalist army aided by an unblown bridge from a withdrawing Italian communist brigade the agent provocateurs once again thronged the streets awaiting the arrival of the army troops. In a final dramatic twist a Basque tank appeared in the main square, fired a few rounds and withdrew.  At 5 p.m. The Nationalist 62nd division entered the city.  The cheers from the local populace sounded hollow in the empty streets.

Only Guernica remained defiant………..

Narrative

The planes appeared as specs on the horizon. Almost as it appeared to late did they peel off from their formation and bear down on Antonio of the 2nd Armour regiment. He immediately shouted “el avion!” and dropped down into his 9.5 ton T26 from the cupola where he was enjoying the autumn sun.  For a week now they had been harried and pursued by enemy planes, strafing their formations,  bombing bridges, churning up roads and villages. The bottleneck going south was making progress but it was slow. It had taken Antonio and his column of T26s a fortnight to travel what should have taken a few days, The roads were clogged not only by military formations but multitudes of fleeing civilians all moving south down the Aragon valley to sanctuary in Catalonia. The troops were a mixed bunch, comrades and socialists from Spain, some from his home town, Internationalists from France, Russia and England, even some Poles.  He saw Catalans and  a number of Basque stragglers who had escaped the burning of San Sebastian. All now were moving in  slow columns south harried from the air and by occasional  shellfire exploding among them from the Nationalist formations to the east over the Aragon. There was little escape as their passage was confined to the narrow valley between  the Aragon to their right and the  foothills of the Pyrenees to their left.

At least Antonio had some protection with a few centimetres of steel between him and the bullets  unlike the poor unfortunates sheltering beside his small machine.   There were rumours of a counterattack being planned. He had received orders to move to an assembly point a few miles north of  Lerida.  However he still had many miles to go. Rations were low, fuel just about getting through but the air was chilling and damp and he knew that with the autumn rains the road such as there were would become quagmires.

His reverie was shattered by deafening thuds and ringing against the thin armour. Real rain would be preferable to the rain of lead pouring down on him now.

SEP I 1938

Narrative

The plan for the capture of the coastal seaside resort of San Sebastian was to drive north from the direction of Pamplona and cut off the town from the French border. This was achieved by Mola’s force of 35000 men in the eastern column under major Beorlegui. Here they drove a wedge between the city and the border town of Irun. Six days later the Espana and Almirante Cervera arrived and shelled the town. The Republicans threatened to kill Nationalist captives if civilian casualties were inflicted. The Nationalists called their bluff and the main assault was launched. The workers in the garrison well prepared and behind fortified defences made a good showing and gave hope to the Republican side that worker esprit de corps and well prepared defences could hold the line, but eventually Mola brought up artillery, assault engineers and the skilful  and feared legionaries. The result was vicious hand to hand fighting between the fanatics on both sides with the key Punza ridge changing hands several times.  One factor in the final loss of the position was the closing of the French border denying the defenders vital supplies. This did not stop French peasants reporting Nationalist artillery positions to the defenders but ultimately to no avail as the better equipped Nationalists stormed the centre and took the town.  But the victory was not without cost as half the entire Nationalist engineering corps was consumed by the fighting.

AUG II 1938

Narrative

The Nationalists face a dilemma at this point. The elimination of an entire stack of Catalan defenders produces a potential weakness that must be exploited to the full. The previous attack NW of Zaragoza had severed the Republican lines with the majority of the strike force including all the International Divisions plus most of the 4-6 Pa divisions U1 in the Pamplona area.

The Republic felt secure that their 13 point defensive line would hold and determined themselves to maintain their encirclement of Pamplona. The loss of this city to the National cause would be a great propaganda coup and may lead to the relief of San Sebastian. They did not therefore move troops south last turn.  The Nationalist having created a hole (and cursing the fact that their exploitation troops were still locked in combat with the Basques) need to isolate the point of weakness as best as possible. Their dream would be to slice directly East out of Catalayud to the Pyrenees thus trapping and isolating/destroying the cream of the Republic and possibly winning the war.  Their dilemma is how best to inhibit the ability of the Republican forces to escape. The initial one might say obvious method, would be to plaster the route south to slow any Republican forces in the North moving south. However most are ZOCed and have the Aragon River to cross which limits them to a one hex move south anyway.

The other forces North of Zaragoza will be needed to hold the line and route south anyway so are unlikely to want to move too much south knowing that any that do move would further weaken the defence and could allow a second attack against this long exposed flank.

No the best solution , the Nationalist leader decide is to blanket the area to the  West of Saragossa.

As luck would have it (for the Republic) they had attempted an attack from this area last turn so have some reserves in the area. It is these the Republic wants to inhibit and so it is here that the more significant harassment is targeted. Unfortunately all the air force is one factor short of ideal coverage which would allow only adjacent forces  to move into Zaragoza. Nevertheless with the current coverage only one 3-6 and one 2-3-5 can enter from the south adding to any directly adjacent forces which are limited. The mission is helped by the fact that there is only a narrow clear corridor North/South up the valley to Pamplona which limits the ability of the Republic forces to skirt around the harassment hits. All wait to see how the drama will unfold and if any significant gains can be made by the Nationalists before the autumn mud slows/stops operations.

Narrative

Albacete is coming under threat as the Republican spoiling attack north of the town is parried and reversed with great loss of life on the Republican side. Albacete long time base of the International brigade and useful to the republic for its concrete all weather runway is now within range of the Nationalist heavy artillery. The barracks here since e the early days have been the training ground and centre of the International brigades. German communists have long since cleared and prepared it. Previously the centre was in a parlous state, lice ridden with many hygiene problems especially for the many volunteers weakened by unemployment and the malnutrition that is its bedfellow. The rations of beans in oil contributed to the ever present bouts of dysentery suffered by the British, Canadian and American volunteers unaccustomed to “foreign food”. The disparate forces were a mixed bunch with the Germans posting rousing entireties such as “We Exalt Discipline” while the French posted precautions against Venereal disease. But this was in the past and the idealistic and strong forces of the International brigade steeled themselves for a possible Nationalist attack

JUL II 1938

Narrative

This turn presents an interesting dilemma and decision for the Nationalists attempting to re-establish contact with the “Pamplona Pocket”, halt the Republican advance north and capture San Sebastian.

The situation is like this (See Photo) last turn the Republic finally linked up with the Basques. The Republic thus have a substantial stack of 21 Factors in 2733. The Basques moving south have a far weaker force comprising a 3-4-5* XX in 2133 and immediately to the northeast 2x 2-3-5*XXs in 2032.  These two hexes are separated by a mountain Hexside.

(The Basque move south now appears rash but they anticipated a Republic advance a turn previously when the Nationalists were relatively weak and concentrating on Bilbao. The fortunes of war were not in the Basques favour and the Republic rolled a 1 resulting in an AS, thus throwing off the timetable and allowing the Nationalists to muster a counter attack force against the weak Basque sally south).

The Nationalists can amass sufficient factors to attack either force but not both.  So which Hex do they attack?

The Pros and cons are as follows.

Option1 2133.

For:
The stack is weaker.
Any attack will consume less precious AS
An advancing force will sever the tenuous ling with the Basques
An Advance will place a substantial blocking force between the 1 frontage Republican force moving north and the Basques blocking any advance along this axis.

Against:
Ignoring the two divisions further north in 2133 will allow them to escape into San Sebastian and form a strong redoubt which will take a couple of turns to reduce.
This will allow the Republic time to bring additional forces to the fight.
The force sent to the southernmost hex will be unable to join any reduction of San Sebastian.
The mountain Hex 2032/2133 will slow movement and limit the attack capability of this force should the 2-3-4s decide to stand in place.

Option 2: 2032

For;
The 2x 2-3-5* XXs can be eliminated while in the open to prevent them falling back to San Sebastian
The 3-4-5 further south will be prevented from moving north
The force will be marching towards the eventual target of the campaign, San Sebastian
The force will be available for the attack on the city quicker
Any advance will be shielded from counterattack by the mountain Hexside 2032/2133.
The Republicans still be blocked from linking up and will be stretching their attack force too thinly to sustain any further attacks.

Against:
Not occupying 2133 will allow the21 point Republic force a “free move” one hex further north without the need for an expensive high AS attack.
This will allow the Republic the option to attack Pamplona from 4 sides in lieu of any further moves north.

Which will you choose?

Read on to find out the choice taken, the result and future turns for the eventual outcome.

Narrative

The Nationalist position is looking grim at the moment. The link up with the Basques if it had occurred would probably have persuaded them to seek terms but there is still a hope that the corridor can be held and the Basques eliminated.  With 3 gobernetos gone (for Asturias collapse is inevitable) the VP loss will be considerably reduced but whether the Nationalists can regain enough territory to claw back any sort of victory is slim. Still they fight on for the moment.

JUN I 1938

Narrative

Pamplona, one of the hotbeds of the revolution, is under threat from Republican forces moving north, and is to be defended at all costs. General Emilio Mola, the myopic and meticulous commander who infuriated fellow commanders with his caution dispatched his Reservada No 1 from here on 25th May 1936, oragnizes the defence. The Republic generals, despite evidence to the contrary, dismissed Mola’s preparation in Pamplona for the uprising stating that “Mola is loyal to the Republic” Not much later a strong detachment of 1400 Carlist Requites sent by Mola from his Pamplona base arrived to support the uprising in Saragossa, with others sent to Madrid and along the coast to Asturas. Yet now this cradle of the revolution is under threat. The Nationalist have 3 divisions plus supporting arms in place, reinforcements are rushing south to reinforce the enclave. The next few weeks could be decisive. Long live the Revolution!

On checking the fate of the collapsing units the Republicans find to their horror a Santandero XX under a fort in Eskudi, a” Forgotten Legion”.  (A technical rules breach as only 2Res are allowed outside the aspiring republic) In a bizarre twist of fate it survives the collapse as a Fragile division fighting on for the cause. Had it failed the roll the Nationalist would have a clear run at Bilbao – a lucky escape for the careless Republicans. At this point I considered a penalty for the rules breach but the fact that it was not available as part of the Santander defence force seems sufficient in itself to compensate for this.
