In 1982 a couple of students at South Dakota State University founded a gaming club called SDSU gamers to play Europa games. In February 1983, the first edition of Nuts and Bolts was published, with Gary Stagliano as editor. Nuts & Bolts averaged 8 pages per issue while production delays and summer holidays led to several double issues of 16 or more pages. Content was focused on Europa games exclusively, answering DNO questions. Merita-Merkur, Case White, Narvik, Fire in the East, Winter War, Western Desert, Near East, strategy, player aid charts are all part of the newsletter.

After an unsuccessful attempt of Bill Stone to merge Nuts and Bolts with ETO, Winston Hamilton convinced the staff in 1988 to merge with Winstons own "The Euopa Newsletter", which subsequently took the name of The Europa Magazine (TEM).
