Axis Turn

Italian losses have reached 75 RE’s, and on a roll of ‘3’ Italy surrenders. A Para-Inf III and 2x CCNN X’s remain loyal to the Axis. The Germans disarm Italian units for a total of 16.8 Inf RP’s. Italians units within 3 hexes of more Allied RE’s than German RE’s become Allied units. All the Italian units along the French-Italian border go over to the Allies. More problematic for the Germans are Italian units in the second line behind the Rhine River that become Allied units. These include 2x Alpine XX’s in the mountain hexes of the Black Forest, a Mot Inf XX along with a pair of ants in Heidelberg, and 3x Arm XX’s now adjacent to Allied stacks that had broken thru the German front line, in effect widening those breaks.

Due to Allied units in WK IX the Germans activate the Garrison of WK IV except for 4 RE’s of training and replacement units. The Germans receive 4x Inf XX and 4x Pz X’s, and stop the transfer of 2x Cav XX’s, 11x Inf XX’s, and 3x Pz X’s to the east. The Germans replace 2x PzG XX’s, 5x PzG X’s, and 2x Inf XX’s. In the Netherlands the Germans retreat north of the Lek River to defend the Dutch cities of Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Amsterdam. The rest of the Germans units in the Netherlands retreat to the east bank of the Ijssel River, forming a line of 3 stacks to block the Allied advance. The main German front line starts just northwest of the town of Zwolle and runs southeast to the medium city of Bielefeld. The Germans units in the Ruhr, now U-1, remain trapped in 5 major city hexes. From Bielefeld the front runs southeast thru a woods hex and 3 wooded rough hexes. The front jogs southeast for a hex, then southwest into wooded rough, before going southeast thru Frankfurt. A line of units still cling to the east bank of the Rhine to keep the Allies off the main front north of Frankfurt. South of Frankfurt the front runs southwest to the minor city of Heilbronn, then on the west bank of the Neckar River thru 2 woods hexes, and then southwest thru 3 wooded rough hexes of the Black Forest. Cut off is a stack in Mannheim and 4 stacks along the Rhine River just north of the Swiss border. By the end of the turn the main front line is 30 hexes long and has an average defense strength of 10.3 pts.

SF 42 – 1944 Aug I

Allied Turn

This test was to adhere to the SF OB’s as closely as possible. However, Joslen has the British 9th Arm XX disbanding on the last day of July 1944. Its armor component was disbanded in August 1944. It is difficult to figure out what was its motorized infantry component and what became of it, but given British manpower shortages at this point in the war it is safe to assume it was disbanded at about this time as well. Therefore the 9th Arm XX disbands for 5x Arm RP’s and 3x Inf RP’s. The US rebuilds its 79th and 88th Inf XX’s. The British rebuild their 15th Inf XX and 2x Art [xx]’s. At 2 hexes east of Epernay the front turns southeast in a straight line for 9 hexes thru the medium city of Nancy, 4 woods hexes, and a wooded rough hex. Axis Turn

The Germans activate their entire garrisons in WK I and WK GG and withdraw these units east per the OB. Although these activations mean the Soviets had only reached the eastern fringe of the very large Western SMD it was decided to start honoring all withdrawals to the east. Because the Allies had entered the adjacent districts of MR 6 and MR 20 the Germans activate the garrisons of WK V and WK XII leaving 4 RE’s of training and reserve units in each WK to maintain production per SF Rule 43F. In the West the Germans replace 2x PzG XX’s, 4x PzG X’s, and 7x Static and Res XX’s as 4-6-6 Inf XX’s.

The Germans pull back the northern half of their front line, giving up defending the English Channel until the port fort on Walcheren. Left behind were 2x Inf XX’s and a Static XX that can not escape the clutches of Allied ZOC’s. The Axis defense line starts just northwest of Antwerpen, and runs southwest in front of Antwerpen and Bruxelles, thru the medium city of Charleroi, thru 2 woods hexes, to an apex in a fort just southeast of Reims. At that point the front line turns southeast behind the Marne River, then in front of Nancy, using 3 woods hexes, a rough hex, and a wooded rough hex until it juts southwest into the last mountain hex of the Vosges Mts. The last 3 southernmost hexes of the front line are now on the west bank of the Rhine, running thru the medium city of Mulhouse. By the end of the turn the front line is 24 hexes long and has a average defense strength of 14.4 pts.

Europa in new old hands

News, actual news, actually news about Europa – who would have thought. John Astell posted on the Europa-Mailing-List: After two decades of HMS sitting on Europa and getting nothing done, something is moving – Arthur Goodwin and Gar Olmsted have handed the rights to Europa back to Paul R. “Rich” Banner, the original creator of the trademark. At this point it is unclear what that means, but in case of Europa, currently any news are good news.

Here is the press release in full:

For Immediate Release

The Europa Series

The Europa Series of division level-military operations in World War II in Europe was, and is, a staggering undertaking. Between 1973 and 1989, the legendary GDW Game Designers’ Workshop produced eleven magnificent die-cut counter and hex grid map wargames covering every major operation in Europe: The East Front, the West Front, operations in Norway, in Poland, the Balkans, and in Africa.

Europa has provided hours of enjoyment for its fans across the decades, and we want it to continue to do that while attracting new fans. HMS Historical Military Services of Denver Colorado has been the steward of the Europa properties over the past two decades, and Gar Olmsted and Arthur Goodwin (and a host of others) have worked their hearts out on Europa and its associated concepts. But health and age have finally brought that stewardship to an end, and Europa has returned to its original series creator (and CS Roberts Hall of Fame designer) Paul R. “Rich” Banner.

Europa fandom is an important part of this game series mystique: over the decades, its players and backers have been both dedicated and supportive. For example, the readers of Campaign Magazine, in 1975, voted the first Europa title: Drang Nach Osten! Quote: “The Best Game of All Time!” We’re trying to live up to that reputation.

In every end is a beginning, and the Europa Series is now preparing to intrigue and entertain a new generation of wargamers. Watch this space.
