Allied Turn
This test was to adhere to the SF OB’s as closely as possible. However, Joslen has the British 9th Arm XX disbanding on the last day of July 1944. Its armor component was disbanded in August 1944. It is difficult to figure out what was its motorized infantry component and what became of it, but given British manpower shortages at this point in the war it is safe to assume it was disbanded at about this time as well. Therefore the 9th Arm XX disbands for 5x Arm RP’s and 3x Inf RP’s. The US rebuilds its 79th and 88th Inf XX’s. The British rebuild their 15th Inf XX and 2x Art [xx]’s. The US replaces 3 air groups and repairs 7. The British repair an air group.
The attacks behind the line are against 3 empty port forts by assorted units that can not fit into the Allied front line. Boulogne falls on a roll of ‘4’ at 6:1. Calais falls on a roll of ‘3’ at 6:1. Dunkerque falls on a roll of ‘5’ at 7:1. By liberating these 3 minor cities the Allies liberate MR 1.
The first attack on the Axis front line is against a 13-pt stack in the minor city of Mechelen by the British 7th and Polish 1st Arm XX’s. At 3:1, +2 the Allies roll a ‘1’ for an HX. The Germans reduce an Inf XX and eliminate the rest of their stack. The Allies eliminate a British Arm X and a US AA X. The British 7th Arm XX advances into the hex.
The next attack on the Axis front line is against a 17-pt stack just southwest of Bruxelles by the British 11th Arm XX, the US 5th and 45th Inf XX’s, and the British 50th Inf XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 8 air groups. German AA aborts 1 and returns 1. At 5:1, -1 the Allies roll a ‘5’ for a DH. The Germans reduce a Pz XX. The US 5th Inf XX advances into the hex.
The third attack is against a 10-pt stack in Bruxelles by the US 2nd and 8th Inf XX’s, 3x Eng X’s, and 8x Siege Art II’s. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 10 air groups. German AA aborts 3. At 6:1 the Allies roll a ‘2’ for a DR. Cut off by the 2 previous attacks this German stack of cadres is eliminated. The US 2nd Inf XX advances into the hex.
The fourth attack is against an 11-pt stack in the woods just west of Namur by the Canadian 5th Arm XX, the US 35th Inf XX, and the British 78th Inf XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 5 bomber groups. There is no AA. At 6:1, -1 the Allies roll a ‘4’ for a DH. The Germans reduce an Inf XX. The US 35th Inf XX advances into the hex.
The fifth attack is against a 13-pt stack just northwest of Charleville by the US 3rd and 4th Arm XX’s. At 4:1, +3 the Allies roll a ‘3’ for a DE. The Germans reduce 2x Inf XX’s. The US 4th Arm XX advances into the hex.
The sixth attack is against a 13-pt stack in the woods 2 hexes south of Charleroi by the US 1st and French 2nd Arm XX’s. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 3 bomber groups. There is no AA. At 5:1, +2 the Allies roll a ‘5’ for a DE. Cut off by Allied ZOC’s the Germans eliminate their entire stack. The French 2nd Arm XX advances into the hex.
The seventh attack is against an 11-pt stack 2 hexes west of Sedan by the US 9th, the British 1st, and the Canadian 3rd Inf XX’s. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 6 air groups. German AA misses. At 5:1, +1 the Allies roll a ‘3’ for a DH. The Germans reduce a Static XX and retreat the rest of their stack. The US 9th Inf XX advances into the hex.
The eighth attack is against 13-pt stack in the woods just west of Charleville by the US 79th and 85th Inf XX’s and the British 56th Inf XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 8 air groups. The Germans fly in a DAS mission of 8 air groups escorted by 4 fighter groups. The Allied CAP of 4 fighter groups plus 2 more within range on the ground intercept. The Allied fighters all bypass. The German fighters manage to return 1 Allied fighter, the other 5 fall on the DAS mission. They kill 3 and abort 1 of the German DAS mission. There is no German AA. Allied AA aborts 1 and returns 1. At 4:1 the Allies roll a ‘1’ for an EX. The Germans eliminate their entire stack. The Allies reduce the US 79th Inf XX and eliminate an AA X and a Arm II. The US 85th Inf XX advances into the hex.
The ninth attack is against a 17-pt stack 2 hexes southeast of Reims by the US 2nd Arm XX and the US 1st and Canadian 1st Inf XX’s. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 10 air groups. German AA returns 2. At 5:1, -1 the Allies roll a ‘5’ for a DH. The Germans reduce a Pz XX. The US 1st Inf XX advances into the hex.
The tenth attack is against a 15-pt stack in the woods 2 hexes east of Chalon-sur-Marne by the US 82nd Abn XX, the US 88th Inf XX, and the British 3rd Inf XX. The eleventh attack is against an 11-pt stack just west of Verdun by the US 4th and 83rd Inf XX’s and the French 1st Inf XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 8 air groups. German AA aborts 1. At 7:1 the Allies roll a ‘6’ for a DE. The Germans reduce a Static XX and eliminate the rest of their stack. The US 4th Inf XX advances into the hex.
The twelfth attack is against a 13-pt stack in a fort just northwest of Nancy by the British Guards Arm XX, the British 6th Abn XX, the US 30th Inf XX, and the British 51st Inf XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 8 air groups. The Germans fly in a DAS mission of 2 attack groups escorted by 2 fighter groups. The Allied CAP of 2 intercepts and fights it out with the escort. Each side kills an opponent. German AA aborts 1 and returns 3. Allied AA returns both the DAS air groups. At 5:1 the Allies roll a ‘4’ for a DH. The Germans eliminate a Pz cadre and retreat the rest of their stack. The British 51st Inf XX advances into the hex.
The thirteenth attack is against a 9-pt stack behind the Meuse River in the woods just southwest of Verdun by the US 7th Arm XX and the South African 6th Arm XX. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 5 bomber groups. There is no AA. At 6:1, +2 the Allies roll a ‘2’. Cut off by Allied ZOC’s the entire German stack is eliminated. The US 7th Arm XX advances into the hex.
The fourteenth attack is against an 11-pt stack behind the Moselle River in the medium city of Nancy by the British 1st Arm XX, the US 80th Inf XX, and the British 5th Inf XX. The eighteenth attack is against an 11-pt stack in wooded rough 2 hexes west of Strasbourg by the US 6th and Canadian 4th Arm XX’s. The Allies fly in a GS mission of 4 air groups. There is no AA. At 5:1, +1 the Allies roll a ‘2’ for a DR. Cut off by Allied ZOC’s the Germans reduce an Inf XX and eliminate the rest of their stack. The US 6th Arm XX advances into the hex.
The last attack is against the 3 cadres retreating from the Vosges Mtns by the French 1st Arm XX, the US 29th Inf XX, and the British 46th Inf XX. There are no air groups left to fly GS. At 7:1, +1 the Allies roll a ‘5’ for a DE. The Germans eliminate their stack. The US 29th Inf XX advance into the hex.
Axis Turn
The Germans have a Pz XX and a Pz cadre withdraw east. The Germans replace 2x PzG XX’s, 2x PzG X’s, and 6x Inf XX’s. The Germans replace 4 air groups and repair 2. The Germans disband a Rkt Art X for 7x Inf RP’s and an Aslt Gun II for 2x Arm RP’s.
The German front line now starts just northwest of Antwerpen, runs southeast thru that major city, and 1 hex past that city. The front line then turns southwest for 6 hexes thru the minor city of Louven, thru the unimproved fortress of Namur, thru the woods, and behind the Meuse River to an apex in a fort at Charleville. From there the front line turns southeast, behind the Meuse thru the town of Sedan, thru the unimproved fortress of Metz behind the Moselle until 1 hex away from the Rhine just northeast of Strasbourg. This section of the front contains 4 forts and a woods hex. At that point the front runs southwest for 2 hexes on the west bank of the Rhine before running 4 hexes along the Westwall hexes on the east bank of that major river. By the end of the turn the front line is 24 hexes long, and has an average defense strength of only 9.9 pts.
